MISSION STATEMENT
In 1999 along with other Vietnamese communities in the United States of America, Bishop Kevin Boland established Saints Peter and Paul Parish and located it at the Nativity of Our Lord Church with these missions:
- To preserve and develop the traditional Catholicism of the Vietnamese in the city of Savannah and the vicinity.
- To help the Vietnamese who were born and raised in the evangelized culture of Vietnam to continue practicing their faith in the new milieu.
- To help the youth translate into English the Catholic faith they received at home and incorporate it to their daily life.
Co-operating with the Americans who built and practiced their faith for years in the Church of The Nativity of Our Lord, the Vietnamese Catholics of Savannah maintain and spread the Catholicism at Sts. Peter & Paul Parish.
Most of the Vietnamese arrived in this country the last 40 years. Right back home Christians represent only more or less 10 percents of the population. Fortunately almost all Christians are Catholic. And we enjoy the advantage of the natural unity of Christianity. This has made the Christianity more attractive to the people with a vast majority of non-Christians.
Last 40 years the Vietnamese back home have suffered some kind of persecution under the communist regime. And people have developed a way of living their faith in silence. It’s silent but it’s more profound and deeper than when things go easy. Once arriving in this country with more freedom for evangelization, the Vietnamese are so excited. But at the same time they have to face the new situation with lack of preparation to keep faith the way they have used to. As the song goes: “Faith of our fathers, holy faith. We will be true to thee till death”, the Vietnamese boast of their more than 300 thousand martyrs during the first 4 centuries of evangelization in the country. One hundred and seventeen of them were canonized in 1987. The Church celebrates the feast of these martyrs on November 24th of each year.
Here in this Diocese of Savannah, thanks to the support of the Diocese and its bishops, we now have an established Vietnamese Parish of Sts. Peter & Paul. It is the most advantage for us to practice the faith of our fathers and to build the Body of Christ with all people around us. We cherish this faith and we try to do our best to make sure that the spirit of evangelization will always be the first concern of everyone in our community. God bless America!
